Son-shine in My Soul: Resting in God When Life Feels Heavy

Son-shine in My Soul: Resting in God When Life Feels Heavy

Summer has a way of making us think we should feel happier. More rested. More at peace. We picture sunshine, vacations, slower schedules, and joyful memories being made. But even in this season, finding Son-shine in My Soul: Resting In God When Life Feels Heavy can make all the difference when life doesn’t feel light.

But sometimes anxiety still follows us into the sunshine. Stress doesn’t disappear just because the calendar says summer. Neither does disappointment. Or fear and emotional exhaustion. In this season, some of us are carrying heavy things right now while still trying to smile through them.

Life has a way of exposing what we’re really leaning on.

Psalm 62 speaks directly into that kind of restlessness. David writes this Psalm during a season of betrayal, pressure, and opposition. Yet instead of panicking or trying to control everything around him, he says this: “For God alone my soul waits in silence…”- Psalm 62:1

That word alone matters.

David reminds himself that true rest is not found in people, circumstances, answers, or outcomes. His soul will only find rest in God. That’s hard for many of us because we don’t like silence. Or waiting. And we definitely do not like feeling out of control. When life gets shaky, we rush to fix things. We replay conversations or overthink situations. We carry things God never asked us to carry.

But Psalm 62 gives us a different pattern for hard seasons: Rest. Resistance. Return. Release.

Rest in God Alone

David says: “He alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be greatly shaken.”-Psalm 62:2

Notice David does not say life is easy. He says God is steady. That kind of confidence does not happen overnight. It grows in the waiting. In the quiet. In choosing to trust God before we fully understand what He’s doing.

Matthew 11:28 says: “Come to Me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” Sometimes the most spiritual thing you can do is stop striving long enough to sit quietly before God and remember who He is.

Resistance Will Come

David also acknowledges opposition. “How long will all of you attack a man…”- Psalm 62:3

Some resistance comes through difficult people and disappointment. But at its root comes from Satan; the destruction worker. The enemy loves fear, discouragement, bitterness, and lies. He wants us exhausted, distracted, anxious, and spiritually unstable.

But David shows us something important: he does not let the pressure become louder than God’s truth. Instead of letting opposition define him, he keeps returning to the character of God.

Return Your Soul to Truth

And I think that’s something many of us need to remember this summer. Because we spend a lot of time trying to refresh ourselves with temporary things: vacations, shopping, scrolling, staying busy, comfort food, mindless entertainment, or simply trying to escape for a while. But temporary distractions cannot refresh a weary soul. Only Jesus can do that.

Real joy is not pretending life is perfect. It is confidence that God is still good, still near, and still faithful no matter what season we are walking through. That’s why joy and peace are deeply connected. Peace guards the heart. And joy remains rooted because of who God is.

So, this summer, maybe the better question is not: “What’s making me happy?” Maybe the better question is: “What’s refreshing my soul?” Because vacations end. Ice cream melts. Summer eventually fades. But the joy found in Christ is not seasonal.

And that kind of joy can stay rooted deep in your heart long after summer is over.

Release It to God

“Trust in Him at all times… pour out your heart before Him; God is a refuge for us.”- Psalm 62:8

God never asked us to carry every burden alone. He invites us to pour out our fears, frustrations, disappointments, and worries before Him. Not because He needs the information, but because we need the surrender. So many of us are gripping situations so tightly that our souls are exhausted. But rest comes when we stop trying to hold everything together ourselves and finally release it to God.

Sometimes releasing things to God is not a one-time moment. Sometimes it’s daily surrender. Again. And again.

Find Rest for Your Soul

Psalm 62 gives us a pattern for difficult seasons:

  • Rest in God alone
  • Recognize resistance
  • Return your soul to truth
  • Release your burdens to Him

Because “Son-shine in your soul” is not about pretending life is easy or being happy all the time.

It’s about who your soul turns to when life feels heavy. And sometimes the most faithful thing you can do is stop striving, stop fixing, stop carrying everything yourself… and simply rest in God alone.

With Son-shine,
