What’s Refreshing Your Soul This Summer?

What's Refreshing your soul this summer?

Do you remember singing the Vacation Bible School song: “I’ve got the joy, joy, joy, joy down in my heart…” Where? Down in my heart to stay. As kids, we sang that song with big smiles and zero hesitation. Joy felt simple back then. But somewhere between childhood and adulthood, life has got complicated. Schedules got fuller. Stress got heavier. Unexpected problems showed up. And suddenly joy did not always feel so easy to hold onto.

That’s why I love Philippians 4. What makes this passage so powerful is that Paul writes it from prison. He’s chained to a guard, dealing with pressure, uncertainty, and hardship. Yet right in the middle of all of that, he says: “Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice.” (Philippians 4:4)

This almost sounds shocking! Because most of us rejoice when life goes well. We rejoice when prayers are answered, plans work out, and everything feels smooth. But Paul reminds us that biblical joy is different from temporary happiness.

Happiness depends on what’s happening. Joy is rooted in who God is. That changes everything. Paul does not say to rejoice in prison, pain, conflict, or pressure. He says to rejoice “in the Lord.” Why? Because circumstances change, but Jesus does not.

When Summer Doesn’t Feel Restful

And let’s be honest, summertime has a funny way of making us think everything should feel lighter. We picture vacations, sunshine, slower schedules, and carefree moments. But even during summer, anxiety can still follow us around. You can sit by the pool and still feel overwhelmed. You can go on vacation and still carry stress. You can laugh with friends and still feel unsettled inside.

That’s why Paul continues: “The Lord is at hand.” (Philippians 4:5) I love that reminder because sometimes we live like we are carrying everything alone. But God is not distant from us in stressful seasons. He is near. Present. Faithful. Fully aware of what we’re carrying.

Then Paul says “Do not be anxious about anything…” (Philippians 4:6). What’s amazing is that Paul addresses one of the biggest joy stealers of all: ANXIETY. Even in the middle of when we’re trying to refresh our souls, we can still get anxiety or feel stressed.

Bringing Your Burdens to God

Most of us know exactly what it feels like to carry anxious thoughts. We replay conversations. Worry about outcomes. Stress over situations we cannot control. Sometimes we carry things God never asked us to hold onto in the first place. And if we are honest, anxiety has a way of draining joy right out of us. It steals our focus. Interrupts our peace. Keeps our minds spinning long after the day is over.

But Paul gives us a better response: “In everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.”

Notice the invitation: Bring it to God. Every fear. Every frustration. Every “what if.” Every burden you keep replaying in your mind at two o’clock in the morning. God never asked us to pretend we are fine. He invites us to bring our worries honestly before Him. And when we do, Scripture says something incredible happens:

“And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:7)

Guard. What a picture! Paul uses military language here. Just like soldiers stood watch over a city, God’s peace stands guard over our hearts and minds when life feels overwhelming. That does not mean every circumstance suddenly changes overnight. But it does mean anxiety no longer gets the final word. God’s peace steadies us from the inside out.

The Only Refreshment That Lasts

And I think that’s something many of us need to remember this summer. Because we spend a lot of time trying to refresh ourselves with temporary things: vacations, shopping, scrolling, staying busy, comfort food, mindless entertainment, or simply trying to escape for a while. But temporary distractions cannot refresh a weary soul. Only Jesus can do that.

Real joy is not pretending life is perfect. It is confidence that God is still good, still near, and still faithful no matter what season we are walking through. That’s why joy and peace are deeply connected. Peace guards the heart. And joy remains rooted because of who God is.

So, this summer, maybe the better question is not: “What’s making me happy?” Maybe the better question is: “What’s refreshing my soul?” Because vacations end. Ice cream melts. Summer eventually fades. But the joy found in Christ is not seasonal.

And that kind of joy can stay rooted deep in your heart long after summer is over.

With Summer Joy,

💛Dee
